This study was highly regarded by official historians. During the time of the communist regime he accepted the four million figure faithfully and blindly according to the party instructions, but as soon as the regime broke down he freed himself from the rubble of the Soviet propaganda and published a pretentious 'scientific' piece with the title The Number of Victims of Auschwitz.
